Yes, Careyes is a curated coastal community of privately owned villas, casitas, and residences. However, you can stay with a reservation at one of our many properties.

When is the best time to visit Careyes?

Careyes is a year-round destination, offering unique experiences in every season:

From December to April, it is the dry season, ideal for sunny days and outdoor activities. November to January, with lush vegetation, flowers, and butterflies, are magical months. From November to February, whale watching is at its best. April is the driest and coolest time, perfect for the Polo tournament. August is warm with very long days, with the sun setting at 8:30 pm and the turtles’ hatching season at its peak. August is popular amongst residents and visitors from Europe.

Notable events include the Winter Holiday Activities (Christmas to New Year), the Chinese New Year festivities (Typically late January, early February), the Polo Season (November to April), the renowned Copa Agua Alta Polo Tournament (Easter Week), Summer Holiday Activites (August) and for art and music enthusiasts, the Ondalinda Festival is a must-attend event (November)

What is the weather like in Careyes?

Careyes enjoys a unique microclimate on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, making it a year-round destination. Daytime temperatures typically remain in the high 20s°C (80s°F), with cooler evenings in the low 20s°C (70s°F). Rain is infrequent, with fewer than 25 rainy days per year on average. However, please note that Mexico’s hurricane season runs from late May through October. While activity varies each year, September and October tend to be the months with higher chances of rain and storm systems.

Can you visit Careyes for the day?

Careyes is a private community, and access is reserved for residents and registered guests only. However, limited access is available with confirmed reservations at select restaurants, such as Playa Rosa Restaurant and La Duna Restaurant & Bar. Click here for reservations. 

Lilo Beach Club at Careyitos Beach, which is accessible directly from the highway, is open to the public.

What language is spoken in Careyes?

Spanish and English are the official languages in Careyes. As a multicultural destination with residents from over 40 nationalities, English is the most widely spoken language. However, you may also hear French, Italian, Portuguese, and other languages spoken within the community.

Should I bring cash to Careyes? Is there an ATM?

Yes — All the establishments in Careyes accept credit cards, however, it’s highly advisable to carry cash for convenience, as yoga classes, massages, or taxis do not accept credit cards. There is only one ATM, located at Plaza de los Caballeros del Sol.

Are there supermarkets or grocery stores nearby?

While there are no major supermarkets or grocery stores in Careyes, the nearby village of Zapata (20 minutes drive) offers very well-stocked local stores with quality groceries and essentials.

For larger shopping needs, the major supermarkets are located in the cities of Manzanillo, 90 minutes away and Puerto Vallarta (Costco and Walmart), about 2.5-hour drive. Within Careyes, the Casitas de las Flores office concierge provides a small selection of essentials, including toiletries, basic medications, snacks, and drinks.

Can you swim in Careyes?

Playa Rosa Beach is a protected bay and therefore with the calmest sea in Careyes. It is also possible to swim in Careyitos. Please be aware that there is NO LIFEGUARD on duty. Learn more about our beaches.

Iconic Villas, Villas, El Careyes Club and Residences and some Casitas have private pools. El Careyes Club & Residences offers limited day passes with access to their pools during the low season, available upon request and subject to approval. Request here.   

Are the beaches in Careyes accessible to external visitors?

All beaches are public in Mexico. Restaurants and club entrance is reserved for guests and residents.

How do I get to Careyes?

Careyes, Mexico, is easily accessible via Highway 200, which connects Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta along the Mexican Pacific Coast. It’s approximately a 1.5-hour drive from Manzanillo International Airport (ZLO) and less than 3 hours from Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR), which offers more international flights.

Are there direct flights to Careyes?

No, there are no direct flights to Careyes, however, the nearest airports are Manzanillo International Airport (ZLO), approximately a 1.5-hour drive and Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR), approximately 3 hours away. Private charter flights are also available to a nearby 4000 ft grass airstrip in Chamela (CHM31), about 15-minute drive from Careyes. Please note that a 7000 ft paved strip with customs and immigration will open soon 30 minutes north from Careyes.

Is there a taxi service in Careyes?

Careyes has limited taxi services, with a few units available until 6:00 pm within Careyes. After this time, taxis can be arranged from nearby towns like Zapata, approximately 10 minutes away. For convenience, renting a car is highly recommended to explore the area at your own pace.​

Do I need a car in Careyes?

Yes. A rental car is highly recommended during your stay, as taxi service is limited. This is the most convenient and flexible way to navigate Careyes and its surroundings, as many points of interest are spread out and require a car. Vehicles can be rented directly at the airport through the major car rental providers, or contact us for assistance, reservations@careyes.net

Is there a helipad in Careyes?

Yes - there is a helipad located within one of the private properties in Careyes. If you wish to arrive by helicopter, please contact reservations@careyes.net to request special permission, subject to availability and approval.

How far is Cuixmala from Careyes?

Cuixmala is located about a 30-minute drive from Careyes. While nearby, it is a separate destination with its unique experiences and is not part of the Careyes community.

Are there hotels in Careyes?

Careyes does not have a traditional hotel. Instead, we offer a thoughtfully curated range of accommodations — from oceanfront bungalows to hillside casitas, contemporary residences, and stunning clifftop villas. 

El Careyes Club & Residences provides the most hotel-like experience, with on-site amenities like a restaurant, 5 infinity pools, concierge service, and seasonal activity offerings.

Is Careyes all-inclusive?

Careyes is not a traditional hotel or resort — it's a curated coastal community of privately owned villas, casitas, and residences. While we do not offer standard all-inclusive packages, many accommodations, such as the villas, include personalized services, such as a private cook who prepares meals in the comfort of your home. Cooking services are included in your stay, while groceries and ingredients are billed separately.

Is Careyes family-friendly?

Absolutely! Careyes is a multigenerational community. We offer family-friendly accommodations such as El Careyes Club & Residences, Casitas de las Flores, and selected villas that are equipped with amenities suitable for families. Activities like beach outings, nature walks, water and land sports make it an ideal destination for all ages.​

Is Careyes pet-friendly?

Some villas in Careyes are pet-friendly under application. However, Casitas de las Flores, El Careyes Club & Residences, and the Bungalows at Playa Rosa do not permit pets. Several restaurants, including Playa Rosa, Casa de Nada, and Punto Como, welcome pets on leashes.​

What types of whales can be seen near Careyes?

Humpback whales are commonly sighted off the coast of Careyes during their migration season, which typically runs from October to March. These majestic creatures can often be seen breaching and tail-slapping in our Pacific waters. Boat trip expeditions are highly recommended, although sightings are not guaranteed. More info here

What wildlife can you see in Careyes?

Located within the Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve, Careyes is home to incredible biodiversity, including over 70 species of mammals, 270 species of birds, and more than 1,200 plant species.

Some of the most common wildlife sightings include humpback whales, dolphins, sea turtles, coatis, wild boars, deer, armadillos, skunks, and a wide variety of birds such as magpies, chachalacas, and seagulls.
